Oliver Twist
This is the moving story of an orphan boy in 19th-century England.
By the age of nine, Oliver had already experienced hunger and hard work. One day, unable to endure it any longer, he runs away to London, where he is taken in by a gang of pickpockets. When he refuses to steal, he finds himself in great danger. Fortunately, kind people, both rich and poor, help Oliver.
Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812 and died in Kent in 1870. The English author is considered one of the greatest novelists in world literature. Dickens had to leave school at age twelve to work in a factory because his father was imprisoned for debt. He later worked as a journalist and began publishing his novels in serialized form in newspapers. His blend of humor, social criticism, and psychological insight appealed to people of all classes, thereby making him famous.
Some of his best-known novels are: A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, and Oliver Twist.
