The young bee Maya makes an unusual decision. She refuses to live in her dark beehive and chooses to live alone in nature instead. Despite the dangers, she enjoys the sun, freedom, adventure, and friendship. She learns a lot, and her greatest wish comes true when she meets two special humans. One day, however, she learns that her people are going to be destroyed.
Waldemar Bonsels was born in northern Germany in 1880. He died at Lake Starnberg in 1952.
Like his main character, Maya the Bee, the German writer left home early and traveled to Egypt, India, and America.
Back in Germany, he wrote Maya the Bee and Her Adventures, which was published in 1912 and immediately became a worldwide bestseller. Many German soldiers carried this book in their backpacks when they went to the front in World War I. Perhaps it was because its poetic language, subtle humor, and descriptions of nature offered them comfort. Or because, in the end, the bees triumph over their seemingly overwhelming mortal enemies?
A few years later, Maya the Bee was made into a film for the first time, and in 1977, an animated series debuted on television. It was loved by millions of children in many countries. However, the series has little in common with the original’s poetic and philosophical message and plot.
