Bengal, Northern India. Although their marriage was arranged, Bimala found happiness with her husband, Nikhil. He is a modern, socially-conscious prince and landowner who cares for his people and supports the gradual and peaceful separation from British colonial rule. His friend Sandip, on the other hand, believes that violence is justified. Even the young Bimala succumbs to his passionate words and charm.
Rabindranath Tagore (actually Thakur)
Tagore was born in 1861 in Calcutta, Bengal (India) and died there in 1941. He was the fourteenth child of a prominent Hindu Brahmin family.
While studying in England, he was strongly influenced by Western culture. Tagore was a musician, painter, as well as a writer of novels, essays, short stories, plays, poems, and songs.
Based on his idealistic philosophy, he founded credit unions and modern schools and advocated for women’s emancipation. Tagore was also politically active, opposing abuses under British colonial rule while always remaining moderate. In many ways, he resembled the tragic hero Nikhil from his masterpiece, Home and World. In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
