ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Anne of Green Gables

A famous classic for teenagers that adults love as well.

It is the year 1880 in the small Canadian village of Avonlea. The elderly siblings, Marilla and Matthew, wanted to adopt a boy to help them on their farm. But then the lovable, imaginative, and somewhat chaotic Anne arrives, and everything changes. This heartwarming story is about life’s true values.

THE AUTHOR

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Prince Edward Island in 1874 and died in Toronto in 1942.

She wrote several hundred poems, numerous short stories, and twenty-three novels. Her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, made her famous. The fictional village of Avonlea was modeled after her hometown of Clifton. Like her protagonist Anne, Montgomery attended college and later worked as a teacher in village schools.

Anne and the other main characters in her books are intelligent and ambitious girls and young women. At a time when women had few opportunities, these characters refused to simply get married and start a family. Much like their author, they also strove for independence and higher education.
